What’s the difference between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood flooring?

Are you trying to decide on a suitable flooring? Hardwood floors have many features that make them an excellent choice for your remodel. They bring elegance and style into your home. Plus, it is an investment into your home that will increase its value. So let’s talk about it in more detail.

Engineered or Solid?

There are two types of floors in wood flooring, solid and engineered. Solid hardwood has a plank with the same width and thickness throughout the plank, but Engineered wood is slightly different. Engineered wood comes in layers, with the top layer being the desired wood slice. So the wood species is either oak, cherry, walnut, ash, or whatever you want.

Underneath this slice is three or more genuine wood layers applied to the piece with resin. They are positioned in a crosshatch manner. This tends to stabilize the floor. Engineered floors can be used in higher moisture areas than solid hardwood, such as basements. Solid wood wouldn?t be good for a basement because it would warp under the moisture. Engineered wood flooring won’t. Engineered wood also adds value to your home, the same as solid hardwood.

During installation, the solid wood can be finished on-site or beforehand. Engineered wood is made in the factory, so the sanding, sealing, and staining will be done there. So there is less of an installation time with engineered wood vs. solid hardwood.
